If you’re planning a holiday party this year you may want to make some kind of entertainment a part of the festivities. Even more than the location, the décor, and other elements, the right entertainment can set the tone for your event and give your guests a unique, memorable, and truly enjoyable experience that they can carry with them for many a day to come. The right entertainment can add atmosphere and class, humor and fun, or inspiration and encouragement to the tone of your event.
What Kind Of Entertainment?
The most important question is, what needs do you want the entertainment to fill? Will it be the main event of the evening, one of several highlights, or will it simply be background to everything else?
If the entertainment will be the main event of the evening, you may want to have some sort of feature performer such as a variety act of some kind; a magician, a comedian, a juggler, a singer, a show band, etc., and you will probably want the entertainment to last somewhere between thirty minutes to an hour or so.
If the entertainment is simply one part of a bigger program or of several highlighted activities, the same type of performer might still be appropriate, but you may want the length of the performance to be shorter, somewhere between twelve and twenty-five minutes.
And if the entertainment is to be simply background to the party, you may want some sort of ongoing, low key entertainment, such as dance music, strolling close up magic, strolling musicians, or a small orchestra, depending on your budget.
And of course depending on the schedule and time frame, you may decide to use a combination of more than one of the above choices.
Whatever the case, make sure you’re clear about the specific needs you hope to fill with the entertainment, and simply choose accordingly.
Finding the Right Entertainers…
Once you’ve determined the specific needs of your event, it will help you in choosing entertainment. You want to look for entertainers who can tell you specifically what benefits they will offer for your event, and how those benefits will fill your unique needs. If an entertainer is unable to communicate clearly and directly how he or she can fill those needs, they may not have your needs in mind at all. Make sure you’re completely clear about the specifics of what the entertainer will be providing, and that it’s spelled out in a written agreement.
You can find a variety of entertainers in the yellow pages or on the Internet. Don’t assume that the one with the biggest ad will be the best. As with any other service professional, make sure they have experience and good references. Any quality entertainer should be able to provide you with background credits, testimonials, and reference letters from past clients.
And don’t make the mistake of letting price be the only deciding factor. It’s important that the entertainment not only provides a fun filled, lively experience, but also that none of your guests are put off or offended in any way. If your audience is conservative, or a family group, make sure that the entertainer’s material is appropriate. Comedians and other performers who are used to working in adult nightclubs can sometimes have a very different idea of what’s “clean” than what you may have. So make sure you’re clear and specific about your needs.

Whoever you end up hiring, you want to be certain you’re getting the best value for the money you spend on entertainment. Here are a few useful tips to help you determine whether an entertainer can come through for you in bringing the best experience to your guests.
Be sure to ask these important questions…
- “Are you a FULL TIME professional entertainer?” While there are exceptions, in many cases if an entertainer isn’t full time, it may mean he’s either not experienced enough, doesn’t have a good enough show, or is simply not professional and dependable enough to support a full time career.
- “Can you provide references from past clients?” As I mentioned, any performer worth his salt should be glad to furnish you with letters and testimonials from his happy, satisfied customers. If he can’t, you may want to proceed with caution!
- “Do you offer a money back guarantee?” If an entertainer doesn’t guarantee his work, there may be a reason he’s not prepared to do so! Even paying a much lower price is still a waste of money if your guests aren’t thrilled, or worse, are somehow offended or put off by the performance. You need to be certain the entertainment can deliver for your event.
- “Can you tell me CLEARLY AND SPECIFICALLY what benefits you provide for my event?” Many performers are more interested in looking good than in meeting your unique needs. As I mentioned previously, make sure the entertainer is clear about how they can help meet your specific needs.
Use Your Creativity
As with every other aspect of planning your event, don’t be afraid to be creative and to think “outside the box”. Don’t assume that certain types of entertainment are “just for kids”. (That’s one of the biggest misconceptions I encounter regarding magic, here in the Midwestern United States.) Or that they won’t work in certain situations. Quite often the least obvious types of entertainment can be just the unique twist that will bring a touch of freshness and appeal to your event.
The main thing is, don’t automatically rule something out because you think it “wouldn’t work”. Look into a variety of options and ask for input from other creative or knowledgeable individuals. Above all, have fun planning your holiday party entertainment, and you’re sure to make the party fun and memorable for you and all your guests.

Take a minute and remember the best time you had at an event, party or gathering. We bet you felt good about yourself, special, and you enjoyed the environment you were in. Your senses were alive: taste, smell, hearing, sight and touch. We believe the best way to host friends and family is to make sure you address the basic human need to feel good, and to do this through the five senses. It is our rule, one we apply to every party we design. Entertaining in your home is even more special because it is intimate (an extension of you). It is a gift from you, a gift worth giving and one that is meant to be shared. Entertain not to impress but to address (address your guests and make them feel special). Shining examples of this are times we spent surrounding a simple picnic table outside Grandma’s house drinking wine and eating cheese, laughing and sharing time under the simple shade of a tree. Pay attention to all the elements of your party: the food, the tablescape, the music, the lighting and connect with each guest. These connections make memories and remember the guests are always the most beautiful thing at your party so don’t stress.
“How To Tips” on implementing our rule:
Make your guests feel special: Start with the hand written invitation and end with a keepsake from the evening. These types of gestures let your guests know you think they are special.
Use Good Sense:
Taste: Great Food – Keep it simple and use fresh ingredients whenever possible. Never try out a recipe at your party. It is better to stick with tried and true than burn or ruin a trendy dish. Make as much as you can ahead of time.
Sight: Presentation is important. A beautiful signature cocktail for your party when guests walk in, not only relaxes your guests but gives them a visual signal of things to come. Lighting is key. A general rule is that candlelight is always best for night, but most times does not cast enough light for dinning. Invest in a dimmer (this is my husband’s rule) for your dining room, it will help to create the perfect mood while keeping the candlelight ambience.
Smell: Let the smell of the food come through, smell memory is powerful and can bring us back to a place or time in an instant – like how the smell of cotton candy can bring us back to memories of being a child at a summer fair. Make sure to buy unscented candles so you don’t overpower the smell of your food at your table.
Hearing: Music. Always take time to think this through before you host a party. Make your own mix or buy a couple of CDs. Music has incredible power to relax, excite, inspire and transport people to another place mentally.
Touch: Touch your guests’ hearts. Make time for conversation, be a guest at your own party and relish time spent together.

What price to entertain our children? How much entertainment do our children need? At the risk of sounding like an old fuddy duddy, how were children entertained a 100 years ago when there were no television or computer games? Very simply I would imagine.
Imagination – The key to all adventures. Babies and small children will play with simple things like empty boxes, clothes pegs, pots and pans. To them they are all sorts of things because they use their imagination. They don’t expect to be entertained with expensive toys or computer systems they just need to touch and feel things to have fun. Simple songs with actions will be remembered well beyond childhood years and hopefully be passed on to the next generation of children needing to be entertained. Dressing up, making things out of cardboard and paper, the possibilities are endless all that is needed is a little imagination.
Birthday parties used to be simple affairs, nowadays our children expect to have an entertainer or bouncy castle at their parties. Whatever happened to pass the parcel or blind mans buff? The more entertainment we provide for our children the more they seem to need.
Today’s society seems to dictate the trend, maybe we should all try and steer our children gently back to simple entertainment. Switch the ‘telly’ off, dig out the board games, if you can survive the moans and groans of your children then you might just be able to persuade them that entertainment needn’t be just by means of televisions and computers. You can have fun together. You can talk and communicate and entertain each other. Go out to the theatre, see a pantomime, all good fun ways of entertaining the whole family. Memories are precious, if you have a great family night out and have fun together, you will keep the memory for a long time.
Small children used to be given colouring books and pencils, now the trend is to plonk them down in front of the television and let it entertain them. Who knows what information they are subjected to. Children will learn to be inactive, not a healthy pastime.
How often have you heard the words “I am bored”. Does this mean the child needs to be entertained? Certainly not, if you were to suggest that you can find something for them to do you will find that your child miraculously finds something to entertain them.
Something as simple as playing with a ball can be healthy, amusing, fun, and the more people taking part in the game the merrier. Which one of us hasn’t been involved in a football game or game of cricket or rounders, which has grown into an incredible amount of people on both sides. Who cared who won? Playing and entertaining you was all that mattered and it was healthy!
Interaction with others will stand our children in good stead by teaching them social skills and encouraging them to lead a healthy active lifestyle. So encourage your children to go on out there, go with them, entertain, be entertained and have fun !!!

Next step is to take an informal poll, by simply asking some of the people who will be attending the event, what kind of entertainment would you enjoy? Too many times, entertainment for an event is delegated to one person or a large committee without ever finding out if the guests will like it. Once you have decided what type of entertainment you are interested in, the next step is to find a reputable entertainment company, who books all sorts of professional caliber acts.
Entertainment companies, or talent agencies as they are often called can provide you with an array of services, not the least of which is making sure the entertainer you book arrives at your event on time, courteous, and is professional in every way. Because an entertainment company lives and dies based on the acts that it books, they only handle professional acts so it makes them look good when the client’s guests comment on how wonderful the entertainment was. Once you have decided on an entertainment company that you would like to use, call them up and tell them about your event, and if you have a certain type of entertainer in mind, be sure to let them know that. Live entertainment can take many forms and can be more exciting than other forms of entertainment. Live entertainment can be one of the single most important factors in determining the success of your event or wedding. Some of the things to take into consideration when booking your live entertainers are what kind of entertainment would suit my wedding day or event.
When choosing the music for your event, think about the ambience you’re trying to create. Choose a band that are flexible and have a wide range of music genres. For a touch of romance you may want mellow or jazz music to be played during cocktails and meals. To create the upbeat atmosphere to get your guests up and dancing, make sure your live entertainment have a range of dance music to perform in between the meals. In addition some romantic music for the first dance is a must. Decide on the type of band or live entertainment you want, whether it’s male or female vocals you prefer or perhaps a combination of both. An instrumental band would be beautiful during the wedding ceremony.
Your live entertainment needs to be flexible in order to create the different moods of your wedding or event. Think about your guests and the type of music that would be suitable for the different age groups. Entertainers with a large musical repertoire is best so that you can make some choices about what you would like for the bridal waltz and the choice of numbers for some of the dance sets.
