Easy Entertaining – Are You in an Entertaining Rut?

Are you in charge of hosting the next family get-together and find that you are short on time and creativity? When cooking for a crowd do you find yourself on auto-pilot; preparing the same dishes for every event? Do you get the feeling that family members are viewing your get-together as one more obligation rather than looking forward to it? Maybe it is time to change things up!

Try these easy entertaining tips to keep your family gatherings fresh and interesting:

1. Share the cooking: Host a themed potluck such as A Tuscan Family Feast or a Mexican Fiesta. Assign dishes (appetizers, salads, entrees, desserts, drinks) to family members and give recipes if they request it. This takes pressure off of you and offers your family a delightfully different menu.

2. Add a new recipe: Instead of revamping your entire menu, introduce one or two new recipes along with your family favorites that you usually serve. This adds diversity to your menu and new tastes for family members to enjoy.

3. Buy some of your menu items: Fill in your menu with some fantastic purchased items. How about a dessert from the award-winning local bakery or your favorite tamales from a small restaurant? One or two new purchased items can add interest to your menu and can free up your time as well.

4. Change up the usual activities: If you find that family members always gravitate to the television or are only interested in conversing, shake things up! Again, one or two new activities can go a long way to making your gathering new and appealing without upsetting those who are accustomed to a certain routine.

a. Ask the kids in advance to prepare a puppet show or a talent show to entertain the adults. Some children with outgoing personalities will absolutely love the opportunity to share their singing, gymnastics, acting, dance or musical instruments with the family.

b. Introduce a new game to play such as: Quiddler, an inexpensive card game or Buzzword, a fun game that 10 year olds to adults can play.

c. For summertime entertaining, set up a friendly competition, such as a family volleyball, badminton or softball game. If you have a fire pit, sing campfire songs, tell spooky stories, and prepare S’Mores.

d. Kids tend to get bored when they have several hours with nothing to do. Have a piñata or craft/board game for the kids. Craft stores carry complete kits for kids to make a fun craft. This is not only a timesaver for the host, but it keeps the kids entertained. Or take a trip to the dollar store and pick up a colorful container and fill it with jump ropes, bubbles, sidewalk chalk, puzzles, jacks, etc. to keep your young guests entertained.

Having people into your home for great food and warm hospitality adds quality to life. If you concentrate on doing a few things well, you can pull off enjoyable get-togethers that both you and your family will enjoy. Introducing one or two new menu items or activities to your family get-togethers keeps things interesting. Kudos to you for giving this wonderful gift of hospitality to your family!

Lately, there is a big complaint about people not going to the movies anymore. They say the box office is hurting, then you read about the hundreds of millions of dollars that the top movies are making with each new release and you wonder what these people are talking about. The truth is, movie entertainment is right up there with television. People still love to go to the movies. And why not? There are just as many great movie moments as there have been television moments. What follows is just a small sampling of that very long list.

Who could forget the classic movie “Casablanca” when at the end Humphrey Bogart sends Ingrid Bergman on her way, telling her that the problems of two people don’t really mean anything in this crazy world. Who could forget the tears in her eyes or the look on his face? And if that wasn’t enough of a great moment for one movie then how about just a few minutes later when Louie informs Rick that he’ll be leaving Casablanca with him and Bogart spits out the now classic line “Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship”. It doesn’t get any better than that.

What about the classic thriller “Bride Of Frankenstein” when the monster, the bride and Dr. Frankenstein are all trapped in the tower along with the poor innocent couple? The monster, played brilliantly by Boris Karloff, tells the couple to leave but then instructs Dr. Frankenstein to stay, uttering the chilling line “We belong dead”. Three words that said more than so many movies couldn’t say in 90 minutes.

And if that isn’t enough, what about in the classic movie “The Wizard Of Oz” when at the end of the movie, after a long a weary search to find her way back to Kansas, Dorothy finally gets the answer to how to return home. When she tells the good witch that she’s ready the good witch utters the now classic line “Then close your eyes and tap your heels together three times. And think to yourself, ‘There’s no place like home’”. How many parodies have there been on this line and this movie since?

If you want to see the strength and courage of a woman determined to see her way through anything, look no further than Scarlett O’ Hara of “Gone With The Wind” when she spoke one of the greatest lines in movie history when she said, “As God is my witness, as God is my witness, they’re not going to lick me! I’m going to live through this and when it’s all over, I’ll never be hungry again – no, nor any of my folks! If I have to lie, steal, cheat, or kill! As God is my witness, I’ll never be hungry again”. There wasn’t a dry eye in the movie theater when she spoke these lines.

Just 5 lines and 4 movies that wouldn’t take up half your day. But these 4 movies alone would give you a day of memories that would be hard to forget. Think of all the thousands of great movies and great lines over the years.

Think about it and think about what life would be like without the movies.

To most people these two words, entertain and budget, are miles apart. But they don’t have to be. Whether you are a young adult who wants to impress your friends, a new business owner looking to impress your clients, or a mom or dad who simply wants to take a break from the “office” to entertain a few friends you will find these tips useful.

No matter whom you are or what your background, we all enjoy getting together with family and/or friends. However, when money is a little tight you don’t have to opt out of host or hostessing if you utilize some sensible alternatives.

Your first task should be to decide the theme for your event. This will help you to create your guest list as well as help you see what pre-party elements you can bypass and what areas you will want to make extra special.

If you are planning your wedding festivities you will want to focus on the comfort and enjoyment of your guests. For this type of event you could save a ton of cash that could be used for a more practical purchase like your honeymoon or your first home purchase by narrowing your guest list. After all is said and done only you and your immediate family and very best friend will remember your party. Most of your guests will remember the wedding. So have a larger wedding if you must, but limit the wedding party to save major dollars.

For most of us we simply want to entertain a few friends. Be sure to supply a comfortable amount of room for your guests. If yours is a dinner party you will want to ensure you have enough chairs for your entire guest list. If it is a cocktail party you can and should opt for “milling”; room rather than so many chairs.

Another consideration is where you have your event. This can also either be costly or not. Here is a list of some inexpensive alternatives.

1. Your own home or backyard
2. Your local church Fellowship Hall
3. A local residential clubhouse
4. A local business or entertainment complex, i.e. skating rink, bowling alley
5. Park or picnic area
6. The beach or lakeside
7. Your family or friend’s home

The latter suggestion I offer with the thought of further spreading the expense by hosting a Progressive Dinner. These types of parties can be most memorable and fun.

Just what is a Progressive Dinner? Simply put, each course of a meal is prepared and presented by a different diner. My recommendation here is to plan carefully the route to minimize driving distance.

The next issue you need to decide is whether to give out invitations or not. Although a phone call is often less costly than a printed invitation you may want to consider sending them to at least some of your invitees. The more formal your event the more likely this should be done. Some ideas to consider that can help cut down on the expense here are:

   2. Emailed
   3. Online greeting cards

1. Hand crafted cards

Hand crafting your invitations can be fun and will provide a unique invitation that may be cherished by the recipient for many years to come. You can even have a group of close friends or family members assist you with the invitation’s design and creation. Think about the laughs and memories you will be making at the same time.

Band Promotions Materials: Checklist Of What To Send To An Entertainment Agent.

In order to be considered for work through entertainment agency, you need to get on their books. Most respectable agencies have a list of requirements they need from you. These things are generally common to most agencies:

CD demo
Demo should be no longer than 5 minutes in total and should include 5-7 segments of varying song styles. For example, a jazz piece, a ballad, a rock and roll or soul piece and a top 40 piece. Make this relevant to the type of music you are providing. Each piece should be approximately 20 – 30 seconds long, perhaps incorporating a verse & chorus or intro & chorus etc.

Band Biography or Artist Resume / CV
Your resume should be printed in a clear and easy to read layout and should briefly outline the highlights and current status. If you choose to mention details about each member, aim to keep each entry to 50 words or less if possible.

Sales Pitch & Band Marketing
Write a brief statement promoting the positive aspects of your act. Direct this to your prospective clients. (ie. anyone who books your band will receive these). This can be included as an introduction to your resume in paragraph or point form. You need to be able to answer the questions that a prospective client would ask you (Indirectly). i.e:

• Why should I book your band over any other band?
• What does your band do that makes it special?

Other aspects to consider are:
1. Musicianship
2. Punctuality
3. Experience
4. Dress code
5. Public relations (with clients and work suppliers)

HINT: Be concise, honest and to the point.

Songlists
Categorize your repertoire into styles of music: eg: Jazz, Ballads, Rock, 90’s etc. and alphabetize each category. Remember to include the artist’s name alongside of the song. Don’t include the words “..and many more…” because clients ALWAYS ask “What other songs does the band do?” and this inevitably means you need to supply a more detailed songlist. (If you do literally have hundreds of songs – list the most popular ones)

Photograph
The photograph you submit to your entertainment agent can be black & white or colour but must be of good quality. Keep in mind that a great photo can make a huge difference in the decision process of a client. (A 1/2 page photo on the same page as your resume always looks great). You may have a gallery of great photos. Don’t bombard the entertainment agent with all at once. Set a small handful and mention you have more photos if required.

Video
If you have any professional or live footage of your band or artist performance you should definitely submit this. Video has proven to be a powerful marketing tool. It helps to solve the problem of clients wanting to view bands that usually play at private functions where viewing access is difficult.

Fees & Availability
An Entertainment agent will also require a statement of your proposed band fees for a standard 4 hour call (or whatever call time you work to. If there are a few different sized working groups within your act, you should give them a breakdown and specify ie a 3 piece is $xx and a 4 piece is $yy). Supplying ALL unavailable dates that you are already booked is also very useful to an entertainment agent.

Conclusion
There is an abundance of work available in the Wedding and Corporate section of the marketplace. However, today’s market is a consumer’s market! Clients demand a great deal of information from an Entertainment agent so they’ll require the right information from you (the band or artist). If you help the entertainment agent, they’ll love you and will probably end up giving you more work.
